Designing a Smart Organic Composting Bin for Schools

Experts from the Faculty of Interdisciplinary Sciences, Vietnam National University, Hanoi, have provided technical guidance to a group of science students from Ban Mai High School in their project titled “Production of Organic Fertilizer from Agricultural By-products.”

The group, composed of four 11th-grade students — Nguyễn Hoàng Sơn, Nguyễn Tất Đại Minh, Lê Mai Anh, and Lê Anh Bình — recognized that a significant amount of household organic waste is currently being wasted. Organic waste, however, is a valuable resource for producing organic fertilizer, which provides essential nutrients for plants. In rural areas, households with larger land plots can easily convert organic waste into fertilizer. In urban areas, however, reusing organic waste is more challenging and requires specialized equipment to process the waste into fertilizer for vegetables, flowers, and ornamental plants. Therefore, the group proposed the idea of designing a household organic composting bin that transforms waste into a valuable resource while reducing environmental pollution.

Dr. Bùi Thị Thanh Hương from the Faculty of Interdisciplinary Sciences at Vietnam National University, Hanoi, and the Ban Mai High School students carried out the project under the framework of the “Career Guidance Triangle” program organized by the Borderless Education Management Network.

Throughout the project, the students learned how to apply classroom knowledge — particularly in biology — to study the microbial decomposition of organic matter, its applications, and the factors affecting microbial growth. This approach not only increased their enthusiasm for learning but also deepened their understanding of the practical significance of scientific knowledge. Students were able to experience and explore real-world applications of science and technology, inspiring them and their peers to pursue scientific research with greater passion. The deeper purpose of the project was to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and real-life applications, thereby motivating students to discover their potential, identify their interests, and orient themselves toward suitable future careers. Furthermore, the research produced a tangible product that benefits both the school and the community by contributing to the safe and useful transformation of organic waste into valuable resources.

Through their solution — “Researching Biological Agents Using a Smart Composting Bin” — the students enhanced their ability to apply knowledge in practical contexts, developed confidence and curiosity, and improved their academic performance. This aligns with the goals of innovating teaching methods and enhancing education quality. Additionally, the project familiarized students with planning research and designing production processes. Most importantly, the use of organic bio-fertilizer from the composting bin brings several key benefits:

  • Utilizes daily organic waste from households, schools, and other sources.
  • Produces organic bio-fertilizer containing macro, meso, and micronutrients in organic compounds for agricultural use.
  • Helps reduce the risk of environmental pollution.

The project team also participated in networking and knowledge exchange at the Student Research Conference organized by the Faculty of Interdisciplinary Sciences, Vietnam National University, Hanoi.

This achievement was made possible through the dedicated mentorship of faculty members from the Faculty of Interdisciplinary Sciences, especially the active support of Dr. Bùi Thị Thanh Hương. The project’s outcomes have significant practical implications and foster a passion for science among students, encouraging them to pursue further exploration.

Ban Mai High School extends its gratitude to the Faculty of Interdisciplinary Sciences, Vietnam National University, Hanoi, for their support and sponsorship within the framework of the “Effective Career Guidance Triangle 2023” project by the Borderless Education Management Network – EduLightenUp. This initiative provides valuable opportunities for student learning projects, hands-on experiences, and nurturing future career aspirations.
